Thursday morning, while
Lauren and Gwen stayed sleeping after our long day of teaching the day before,
I walked to the nearby hi-so (fancy) hotel “Pen-Ta-Hug” (which means “cute” in Isaan)
to pick up two Fulbrights who were eating breakfast there and had come in on an overnight bus for the Candle Festival weekend: Joey
and Megan. After Joey and Megan checked into their room (#207- directly across the hall
from me!), I woke up Lauren and Gwen and the 5 of us went downstairs to get some iced coffees and green teas.
Downstairs, we ran into…Mahh Lahng. Mahh Lahng offered to take the 5 of us on
an Ubon wat tour. She went home, and returned later with a huge truck (hilarious
in itself). We all piled in, and went and saw some wats! Highlights of the day
for me include watching Lucky (my landlord’s dog) ride a motorbike, seeing a
monk holding some beautiful white lotus flowers exit a wat (so picturesque), dancing
with a very jolly Thai man selling birds, and releasing an eely-fish into the
Mun River to make merit. It was so much fun having Lauren and Gwen- my college
friends, meet Joey and Megan- my Fulbright friends. I was really happy to give
them the standard “Ubon Wat Tour” with Mahh Lahng.
After our wat tour we all went back to Boonmee Mansion and ate a DELICIOUS som tam (Thai), grilled chicken, and sticky rice meal, with Mahh Bin's special "diet" green tea drink (she adds lime juice instead of milk and it's so good!). The perfect end to our morning before quiet time watching a new show called "Miss Advised" online. (We're obsessed!) It was great to have my college girlfriends around like old times.

This is the picture I am most pissed off that my crummy
